Tamlyn
Akins grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, and has known since
before she could sign her name that she would be an artist.
In 1980 she received her BFA with High Distinction in Drawing
from the California College of Arts & Crafts (now California
College of Arts), and in 1983 she moved to Madison, Wisconsin,
with the intention of making art her life's work.
Since
then her work has been exhibited nationally, and in Japan,
honored with awards, and purchased for numerous private and
corporate collections. In 2001 she moved her home and studio
into the rural hills of Black Earth (actually Town of Vermont),
fullfilling a lifelong dream to live and work in the country.
She is currently an active member in the Mount Horeb Area
Arts Association and Wisconsin Painters & Sculptors.
"I
am an artist with many interests. Among my specialties are
florals, animal portraits, naturescapes, and mandalas (circular,
symetrical designs). Although I am most noted for my watercolors
and pastels, I also make paper and beaded jewelry. And I have
developed skill in the ancient art of origami which I fashion
into beautiful ornaments, boxes and wall hanging reliefs.
When I was a child, my father taught me some basic origami,
but I didn't pursue it in earnest until many years later when
I happened upon some books in the library while researching
orchids. This chance discovery in 1994 rekindled my interest
and I've been folding paper ever since."
