I have always
liked to observe people, animals, and the elements and this is how
I knew that I was an artist. Born and raised in the Mount Horeb
area, I went on to get my Bachelor of Science in Art from the University
of Wisconsin-Madison in 2001. After moving to Portland, Oregon for
two years and then traveling around, I returned to the midwest in
2005 deciding to make my art full-time, as a career.
I create as
a way to illuminate the myriad of strange and beautiful nuances
that exist in nature, seeking to both celebrate the world and
to evoke questions of how we relate to it and to each other. I
am inspired by the dark and earthy secrets of the soil, seeds
and trees. My focus has primarily been works on paper -- I enjoy
the meditative and intimate qualities of working with ink, watercolor
and pencil. For a more visceral art making experience, I paint
with acrylic or oil. Conceptually,

I am fascinated
by collecting, language (I recently acquired an old letterpress),
desire and storytelling. My work strives to discover the connections
between science and art, dreams and reality, and how memory, remembrance
and history are linked. It allows me to ponder upon the human
experience and to be drawn towards the haunting and sometimes
whimsical imagery of nature, dreams and decay.
Hilary
will have her home studio open with work on display, both finished
pieces and works in progress. She will be available to explain
and/or demonstrate her process to anyone visiting the studio.
