Vicki FranceI am a self-taught photographer who learned to see the beauty of this place I call home and to tread upon it lightly. I consider myself lucky to have grown up among the towering bluffs that surround the Wisconsin and Kickapoo Rivers. For 40 years my favorite past-time has been getting lost in the wooded hills and valleys of southwest Wisconsin. I have always wanted to share what I saw and felt in these places and photography opened that door. I work to capture the essence of the place and emotions that come over me when I visit these magical and intimate places. Often when I am out in the field shooting I watch as all the elements of a great shot pull together and my heart feels as though it is singing or leaping. My images are the world through my eyes and my love for the driftless area of Wisconsin.

At the age of 12 I knew I was an artist, since a good deal of my free time was spent sketching, sculpting or creating something for friends to hang on their wall. Influenced greatly by both parents and three older sisters, it felt natural creating art since everyone at home was always working on some sort of art project. Hardly ever was there a clear table for dinner. Art was literally being made everywhere in our small house while I was growing up. I jumped around from drawing to acrylics to anything that looked like fun for many years before I stumbled onto photography.

Upon high school graduation I decided that the best way to make a living with art was working as a graphic designer, thus that's what I have been doing for the past 20 plus years. In 1999 I bought my first digital camera and was very soon frustrated with its limited capabilities since I had previous experience with a film single lens reflex. I sold it in less than six months and purchased my first "digital" SLR and a true love story began. These days I shoot between 200 to 250 days a year, squeezed in wherever I can between my 9 to 5 job. I have many photos from my travels, but it is Wisconsin that is my beloved.
