I've
long been interested in woodwork. The familiarity and
mystery in grain patterns and varying species of wood fascinates
me. I often need to do very little shaping to bring out
the beauty in one piece of wood. Yet when the spirit moves
me to create I find great joy in discovering the individual
potential of each piece I work with, whether I cut, carve,
grind, sand, scrape, or polish.
Growing
up in Wisconsin I am most inspired by nature and all that
can be seen on a simple walk in the woods. After studying
art and anthropology at UW Madison I started to really appreciate
ancient instruments and tools and started to get my hands
dirty making all sorts of pieces, from boomerangs to balaphones,
canoe paddles to cabinetry. I'm also a big fan of furniture
makers throughout time, from the works found in Tutankhamen's
tomb, through the Victorian age, to the more modern furniture
crafters of Northern California. I now reside in Blue Mounds
with my wife, dog, cat, and chickens and feel more at home
than ever underneath several very big Walnut trees.
